My week in Parliament has been a very enjoyable, as well as educational, experience. I have always had a great interest in politics and current affairs, so this has been an amazing opportunity for me and I have been able to gain a much broader view of the UK’s political system.

This week Parliament has been debating whether it should be prorogued (i.e. shut itself down) during the month of October. The thought that employees would wish to close down their own place of work would be an unusual concept to most. It is to me as well.

Last week, I visited the Children’s Centre at Egerton Park. It is facing closure due to East Sussex needing to put more of its budget in adult social care. This could also cause the loss of the nursery which sits below the children’s centre. It will be a huge blow to lose these services.

Whilst Brexit plays out in Parliament, or frustratingly does not, closer to home there are very pressing matters which need our attention.

The last fortnight has been dominated by the contest to elect the next Prime Minister. What started as a wide open field of twelve will be whittled down to two. Members of the Conservative Party will then select the winner from the finalists.

Having inquired as to the opportunity of working alongside Huw from work experience, last week I was fortunate enough to shadow Huw during a particularly exciting week in Parliament.

This week in Parliament, we honoured the bravery of our troops who took part in the Normandy landings 75 years ago. Alongside our American and Canadian allies, by night-time, around 156,000 Allied troops had arrived in Normandy, despite challenging weather and fierce German defences.

The turmoil in Parliament allows me to explain how legislation is passed by Parliament (or not as the case may be). This week, the Prime Minister unveiled plans to introduce the EU Withdrawal Agreement in the form of legislation.

This week the team involved in the huge renovation project of Parliament unveiled plans for the new House of Commons chamber. This will be built on the former site of the Health Department. Of more interest to me is what we can do to the remainder of the Parliamentary estate.

This week in Westminster, we have been conducting our business behind the backdrop of the climate change protest organised by the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ movement.
