In questions to the Transport department, Huw welcomed news that half price rail fares would be extended to 16-17 year olds but encouraged transport ministers to aspire to give young people fully discounted fares in the long-term.
Bexhill and Battle MP, Huw Merriman, this week spoke of his constituents when calling on the Prime Minister to reduce the proposed £65 charge which EU citizens will have to pay to apply to gain their rights of UK residence when the UK leaves the EU.
Huw spoke up for a constituent whose employment was terminated due to a spent conviction. He urged the Work and Pensions minister to ensure that public sector employers take a risk on ex-offenders and do not continue to punish them long after their sentence has been spent.
New Year ushers in the latest annual rail fare increase. At just over 3%, and pegged to inflation, this year’s increase is lower than many from the previous 20 years but will rightly be greeted by frustration from passengers who have received a poor service over the last year.
