Although the pandemic may be largely behind us, for some people Covid-19 symptoms have lasted longer than a few days or weeks. In some cases, people can suffer from symptoms, including respiratory and mental health conditions, for much extended periods. Therefore, I believe these it is vital we continue to support people who have these long-term symptoms.
NHS England has also invested £224 million to support the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of people with post-Covid-19 syndrome with £90 million for 2022/23. This has come together to form a network of more than 90 specialist services to support patients suffering from long Covid. The services bring together doctors, nurses, therapists, and other specialists to carry out assessments of those experiencing enduring symptoms.
Research is important to learning and understanding long Covid and how to best treat it, so I understand that over £50 million is being invested in a range of research projects. I am particularly encouraged by the STIMULATE-ICP project at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust which will be one of the most significant long Covid trials to date, aiming to recruit more than 4,500 people with the condition. It is so important that we better understand the physical, psychological and rehabilitation needs for those experiencing long Covid, which is why I firmly support all the ongoing efforts and research.
