Huw in conversation with 6th form students

Last Friday, Battle MP, Huw Merriman, joined Key Stage 3 students of Battle Abbey School for a special assembly to talk about his role as their local MP, life in Westminster and the role of government.

Battle Abbey School had been involved in a week of activities, including a mock House of Commons debate, during UK Parliament Week which ran from 6 to 14 November this year.  6th Form students, Fenella and Thandiwe had designed and led the UK Parliament Week activities and were ready to welcome Huw to the school along with Ms Ann Carey, Head of Key Stage 3.

Following the assembly, Huw joined a group of 6th Formers over breakfast to discuss current affairs and answer their questions about being a member of the government and their constituency MP.

Huw said “I’d like to thank Battle Abbey School, and especially students Fenella and Thandiwe, for all their hard work in arranging a week of activities for Key Stage 3 students to mark UK Parliament Week. It is always a great pleasure to visit local schools to talk about the importance of democracy and voting.  I am sure that this week has helped Battle Abbey students to better understand how Parliament works and how to make your voice heard. It was also good to talk to 6th form students to exchange views and thoughts on domestic and international affairs.”

Sixth Form student Thandiwe said; 'We were thrilled to have Huw visit us at the Abbey to mark Parliament Week. It gave us all a fantastic insight into what drives people to join the world of politics, and what life is like as an MP. The Key Stage 3 pupils really engaged with the topic."
