Many constituents have contacted me about dog fighting.
Although I was unable to attend the debate in Westminster Hall on 29 June due to prior engagements I can assure consituents that I beleive this is a heinous crime. It has been banned in this country for over 100 years. It is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and punishable by up to six months’ imprisonment or an unlimited fine, or both. I also support the ban on owning or selling some types of dogs bred for fighting.
The police have powers to investigate allegations of dog fighting and have the power to arrest anyone suspected of being involved in this barbaric practice. I would urge anyone with any information about it to contact the police immediately.
