Local MP, Huw Merriman, has explained to residents why he voted to extend the Coronavirus Act on Thursday 25 March 2021.
Prior to the vote, Mr Merriman said:
Having looked closely at the detail of this legislation, I am keen to reassure you that this will not extend lockdown until September, but rather extend the support mechanisms made available to businesses and families such as furlough and statutory sick pay until then.
It is really important to understand that the powers that allow the Government to restrict social contact and enforce measures such as face coverings in shops are not derived from this Act, but from the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984. These measures will be removed as we emerge from lockdown.
I believe extending this Act is consistent with the Prime Minister’s roadmap out of lockdown so that our economy can be supported and protected as we unlock.
