Bexhill MP, Huw Merriman, recently joined Bexhill Sixth Form College students for discussion and debate on British politics and the role of an MP.
On his first visit to Bexhill College since being elected to Parliament, Huw talked to over 50 Politics and Public Services students about his experiences as a newly elected MP at Westminster and in the constituency. He told them about the help that new MPs are given by the House authorities to help them settle in, re-direct them when they are lost and get their offices set up so they can start working on behalf of their constituents.
Huw enjoyed a healthy debate with the students on a wide range of subjects and they had plenty of interesting questions for Huw including whether he supported the voting age being reduced to 16, why he went into politics, whether the UK should keep a nuclear deterrent, should there be reforms to immigration law and is austerity working for everyone?
Huw said “It was a pleasure to meet the students of Bexhill College and I thoroughly enjoyed the tough questions and discussions. It’s clear that our local young people are really interested in the issues that affect our local area, the UK and the rest of the world. I hope I managed to give them a good insight into the life of an MP and I shouldn’t be at all surprised to see some of them in Parliament one day.”
Robert Hastie, Politics tutor at Bexhill College said “The students were very energised by Huw’s visit and were still debating the questions raised days afterwards. It really supports their learning to talk to an MP and hear real views and details. I know they are looking forward to visiting Parliament and seeing Huw again in January”
