Bexhill and Battle MP, Huw Merriman visited Catsfield CE Primary School to talk to Year 5 & 6 pupils in Leopards Class about their local road safety campaign last Friday.
The pupils explained to Huw that they have been working with Catsfield Parish Council to find ways of making the road outside their school safer. Last week they carried out a speed survey and found that at least half the cars driving past the school were over the speed limit of 30mph.
The pupils told Huw that they were worried about the safety of the children crossing the road at the beginning and end of the day and also for their lollipop man who has nearly been hit several times. The road is used as a rat run and drivers do not slow down when they are near the school despite the school warning signs
The parish council has been working with the school on this project and plans to install some safety measures with the support of East Sussex County Council. Huw has offered to give them his full support to ensure the measures are in place as quickly as possible.
Speaking at Catsfield, Huw said “I was really impressed with the work that pupils in Leopards Class have already done to make the road outside their school safer. They showed me their latest data which clearly demonstrates that drivers do not slow down when passing the school. I am pleased to see that Catsfield Parish Council and the primary school are working closely together to deal with this problem and I will be giving them my full support.”
